Many of you may not understand the pride which exists in residents from Abilene to Corpus, “bigger is better and everything’s bigger in Texas”, “Don’t Mess with Texas”, it’s real. Texans like real wood, we only sell real wood ‘engineered by God! Since we began publishing post such as Made in America and Investment flooring, all about real wood our Texas business has taken off. And we begin our tour in Paige Texas, 90 miles from Austin as we visit a creative Texan that certainly understand real wood. Peter M. Peter M purchased 1600 square feet of wide plank Caribbean Heart Pine flooring. Along with the CHP, Peter bought several pallets of v joint (groove) utility grade heart pine, for the walls and ceiling. And of course, he did this knowing the challenges of installing that volume in those lengths, not to mention waste factor. About Pete’s Paige Heart Pine TX project

About the project, the sub-floor is 3/4 CDX plywood treated with a Borax based mixture, for fire and water protection. Next the sub-floor sealed using an outdoor deck finish, before covered in #15 felt, to control any noise. Peter told us ” he could not be happier with the way they turned out and that “the installation could not have been easier because the quality of the mill work. The quality of preparations, installation and finish are evident in the finished product, we love it”.

Somewhere around 1977 the writer asked his uncle the question, to which the reply came “yes but don’t tell them cause they don’t think so”. Home to the University of Texas flagship campus, Austin is known for its eclectic live-music scene centered around country, blues and indie rock. Is Austin part of The Texas Hill Country?

The consensus seems to be that yes, Austin is in the Texas Hill Country. The Texas Hill Country is a geographic region of Central and South Texas, forming the southeast part of the Edwards Plateau. The Hill Country plays host to a diverse population across 25 counties. Austin and San Antonio are the two metropolitan areas, each worthy a visit for sure. San Antonio with a population of 1.4 million is now larger than Dallas where we end our trip through Texas. But first, wine country is our vacation stop before any more business.

Did you know Hill Country was Wine Country?

Texas Wine Country? SYP Direct did the 15 things we did not know about Indiana and now we have ‘did you know the fact about Texas.’. How about that 1.7 million tourists visit wine country, every year. Not impressed, those visitors and wine sales generated over 13 billion dollars of economic impact throughout the hill country. SYP Direct is headed to Fredericksburg. “The Burg” , a city in central Texas, is known for its wineries and B&B’s.

During the SYP Direct “tour” we searched for Bed and Breakfast in the area and found the City on the Hill at Spring Creek. What caught our eye? Look around their website we found our Southern Pine in the Hill Country! Seeing the pictures of the Cabins, we knew exactly where we were going to stay. Something about that place felt like home, later we found out it was the people, and the place. We met the nicest most down to earth people who made both of us feel like part of the family. We had a fantastic weekend touring the wine and sampling the wine country. Fredericksburg and the whole area is just a cool place to visit but our trip would not be the same without staying at City on the Hill at Spring Creek, 100% thumbs up.

Nushart asked us to do something unique and very difficult regarding his flooring order. Pete asked us to deliver his Knotty Pine floor on the date of his wedding anniversary, the exact date mind you. Pete’s wife had fallen in love with our #2 grade Knotty Pine and he was going to surprise her with the on time arrival of her new floor. No pressure, but any delay would mean ruining a wedding anniversary, so of course we accepted the challenge.

We use LTL carriers to deliver you floors to either your residence or a commercial location. In the case of residential delivery, the devil is in the details, i.e. shippers hate surprises. What this means is that we have to be hyper-vigilant in setting up the delivery. SYP Direct will confirm and get in writing the delivery plan, but there are a number of issues that may come up during delivery, like weather. The formula is simple. Only a very few pure heart pine mills exist, new heart anyway. Understanding the the difference between pine lumber and pine flooring is step one. Your local pine shop is a lumber mill or mill works shop selling cuts and defects from said lumber mill.

Why is local so important? In the old days, when we still used real wood there was a mill local or “localish”. Today lumber is either exported or turned into fake floor covers such as laminate, vinyl or engineered floors. Problems occur when the homeowner wants real wood and their “trusted professional” gives them all the reasons that fake is better than real. Time is money and real wood takes time, find an installer with your best interest in mind. Real wood is the only investment, the rest are just future liabilities.

In 2015 the owners decided to put our 1 x 10 wide plank Southern Pine to the test by installing our floors in Skybar 247. The year prior, ownership installed our 1 x 6 in Taps and Dolls which is a bar but more “laid back” than Skybar. Misconceptions, Misdirections and Misinformation

Laminate and Engineered floor covers are filling our landfills. Over the next 4-5 years, deposits into landfills will double from current levels of 300,000,000 lb. per year. Laminate & Engineered, add in LVT too, are a leased floor covers which rot forever on public lands? LVT, laminate and engineered floors are not green, they are not even biodegradable. Environmentalist scream about deforestation, but what is “greener” than One House, One Floor.

What is a VOC?

Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are gases that are emitted into the air from products or processes. Some are harmful by themselves, including some that cause cancer. In addition, they can react with other gases and form other air pollutants after they are in the air. Furthermore, because it contains toxic VOCs like formaldehyde and takes decades to disperse, laminate is a health risk long after replaced.

Laminate and single use floors

These compounds continue to produce VOCs after they are in your home. Formaldehyde was found in a major retailer laminate a few years ago. Sixty Minutes did a shocking story, they promised to do better. However, the main manufacturers of this material are in China and Vietnam. Standards, for end products shipped back to the U.S. are nonexistent. For more about this issue contact us today. The carbon footprint of these products dwarfs that of sustainable forest producing the only true eco-friendly floor besides dirt.

Engineered for profit not health

When it comes to sustainability, one of the first issues with wood laminate is the large carbon footprint. It requires a lot of fossil fuel energy to power the required pressure and heat used in the manufacturing process. And more often than not, production occurs in China, that is problematic on a few levels, including VOC regulations.

Wear layers are shrinking

Engineered flooring was an innovation, that actually increased the yield of domestic mills. Early engineered floors had wear layers of ½ or 9 ⅙ of solid wood with small layers of other materials designed to replace sub-floor. In those days we did not have the adhesive we have today, so this was a great innovation; however, the intent was for a few situations, never for the mass market. The problem is that manufacturers came up with some innovative marketing while taking the wear layers down to 2mm, from 1/2 inch.

Laminate and engineered floors are a single use cover, which is exactly like a lease you’re going to pay a certain amount for it, and then it’s going to end up in a landfill. Real wood is the only green choice. A real Wood floor remains functional for 140 years. How many single use covers revolved during that time period? How much homeowner equity turned into profits for shareholders by tricking us into thinking compressed garbage and plastic is better than real wood.

The industry

Lifetime transferable waterproof, not resistant but proof, come on! We have some “luxury vinyl” cost more than our prefinished 7” solid wide plank Heart Pine. No kidding- how upside down is that? But wait, they have a magic warranty. One which can be transferred as if it had any value whatsoever. They claim pine is not durable. Independence Hall still looks good, as do the 3500 Duck camps with pine floors across the marsh (guesstimate). They tell you it cannot be glued or is too expensive, the list is based on their lack of source and motivation to sell unfinished (low margin) flooring.

Arbitrage is the simultaneous purchase and sale of an asset to profit from an imbalance in the price. It is a trade that profits by exploiting the price differences of identical or similar financial instruments (raw materials) on different markets or in different forms. Timber ships to Vietnam, back as a photocopy of wood floor plus some slivers. Presto, the trees “retail” value goes up 100 times, 1000 times? Nobody really knows, like that owl licking the tootsie roll pop.
