Every year, prices rise as wear layers get thinner and boards shorter. Wear layers, the actual veener on top are not mentioned in the marketing. That information is the really important part, right? The cost of real wood floors rises because of demand created by engineered manufactures, and Whiskey Barrels believe it or not.
Durabilty and Wear Layer
The wear layer needs to be at least 4mm to claim any type of durabilty. To be clear that is a veener, 1/16 of an inch thick. So, when you read the box at the liquidation store telling you that 2mm can be refinished you know that is 1/32 of an inch. Not much room to sand, huh?
Why is the wear layer so important?
We know what the ads tell you; they also claim LVT is “waterproof”, really…proof? The problem is that over time the wear layer “wears down” and that 2mm is no mil. The minimum thickness needed to one day refinish the floors, 4mm and 6mm, even better. The gorgeous 7″ Select White Oak next to us is 6mm, solid unfinished or prefinished using Bayou Rustic.
