The eco-friendly floor

Misconceptions, Misdirections and Misinformation

Green, eco-friendly floors are about longevity

Our company offers homeowners the power to choose an investment versus a product. The difference? An investment increases in value when a product is designed to wear out and then replaced. One outlives the house, the others on average, about 7 years. So I ask, which is the green floor? But wait don’t you cut down trees to get real wood? Yes, once and it does not involved any plastic or formyldehyde.

Marketing is not accurate information not anymore

Today, most of us will choose the product best for the environment provided the price is reasonably close to the other choices. In fact, some of us will choose the green product even with a much higher price. So why is the opposite true when green floor shopping? Simple, most of us are not given the information necessary to make that decision accurately. Want a good example, look no further than recycling.

LVT can be recycled just like carpet- FALSE!

Carpet cannot be recycled despite the propoganda, try it some time. Laminte is just chemical “goo” with zero value after ruining your home. And now LVT is the fastest growing component of our landfills.  It absolutely cannot on any scale be made into anything useful! So, instead of the nice recycling thoughts you knew it was going to spend the next 100 years contaminating your groundwater, would that play a role in your decision?

Because most carpets are made from plastics sourced from the petrochemical industry, they can take centuries to breakdown. As these carpet fibers break downbreakdown in landfill, they release methane, one of the most potent greenhouse gasses, into our atmosphere. Meanwhile, toxic chemicals from the carpet can leach into the surrounding environment, especially in landfills that aren’t properly managed.

Plus: Have you ever taken up an old carpet? How about when pets were living on it? It is disgusting, no matter how clean you think you keep it.

Salvaged heart pine

Carpet is NOT King

For decades, carpet was king. Home remodeling took off with the advent of those little synthetic fibers. A small percentage of carpet wore out, but most was replaced when it became outdated, or the house changed hands. Today decomposing carpet holds an impressive and increasing percentage of total landfill tonnage. The E.P.A. estimates that every year, about 5 billion pounds of carpeting go into landfills. That’s 1 to 2 percent of the total U.S. landfill contribution, or 17 pounds of carpeting per person. (Don’t Sweep Carpet’s Eco-Impact Under the Rug – The New York Times (nytimes.com).

5 Things to help you buy an eco-friendly (Green) Floor

Engineered floors are not eco-friendly

Real wood is the only green choice

Solid wood is the only green choice

Engineered “hardwood” floors are created using a veneer measured in Millimeters. In case you are curious, 1 MM = .039 inches. So, a 2 MM wear layer is .117 inches thick. The veneer is glued to backing that may be ⅜ to ⅝ thick and created from a huge variety of materials, which is why you see dramatic differences in prices. It is like advertising just the word Car, with various prices and no other information. Makes a comparison almost impossible, which is precisely by design, trust us we know people in the business. (Humor attempt). – Green floors are real floors.

Quality engineered flooring has a minimum 4MM Wear Layer

Engineered Flooring cannot be refinished without a minimum of 4 MM ‘wear layer’ (veneer). The average lifespanlife span for a quality engineered floor is 7-10 years, then it heads to a landfill including the chemicals used in manufacture. So, where it is made and with what materials are information key to this decision, but so elusive. Terms such as hard scraped and brushed are used interchangeably and the only time you hear the species that comprises the backing is when it is good, not the other way around.

Want a green finish? Moncoat by Rubio

War-anties what are they good for?

We bought it because of the warranty. Please NEVER Buy for the warranty. For the record, all of our prefinished floors come with a warranty on the finish but that addresses manufacturing defects, not every day wear and tear and certainly not all the claims made concerning durability.

Tough standards

Read the warranty, the actual document and these “hard to meet” criteria jump out quickly.  When claiming water damage for example, if exposed to standing water for more than 20 minutes your claim is in-valid. Question: How is the amount of time verified or proven? Of all your relatives that havehas multiple jobs a year, are anyany of them a certified independent flooring claims specialist?

The truth about real wood

Resistance to moisture real versus faux

LIE: Compared to solid hardwood, engineered wood floors have superior resistance to slightly lower and higher moisture levels, which makes them more ideal for use in damp basements or regions with higher or lower than standard humidity levels.

Truth: Buyers are told how a compressedhow compressed particle board with an unknown adhesive handles water better than real wood? The fact is that Southern Pine handles moisture better than any engineered floor. We build decks out of the stuff because it handles moisture on a microscopic level based on the relative porous nature of the wood.

In fact: Moisture is absorbed and released (expansion and contraction) without the breakdown of the board’s integrity. Ask your pro this question. What if you put poly on the bottomon bottom of real wood during the installation? Simple logic and a solution very few professionals even know and much less share.

Allergies and Wood Floors

Wood Floor Shopping, Finish and Install

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, researchers believe that nasal allergies affect about 50 million people in the United States alone, and that number is increasing every year. Allergies affect as much as 30 percent of the adult population in the U.S. and about 40 percent of children. Hypoallergenic means a product contains few allergy-producing substances known as allergens, and in our world, VOC’s. More on that later. So because there’s no agreed-upon scientific or legal definition of the term, the word “hypoallergenic” printed on a label doesn’t necessarily protect you.

Volatile Organic Compounds, aka VOC.

VOC stands for volatile organic compounds, which turn into vapor at room temperature and enter the atmosphere through off-gassing. In turn, the VOC off-gas process creates that fresh paint smell, for example. Depending on the compound, VOCs can severely impact indoor air quality and result in negative health consequences. While short-term issues might be irritation of the eyes, nose or throat, or nausea and dizziness, some VOCs have the capability of causing liver or kidney damage, or even cancer.

Hypoallergenic has no real meaning and Zero VOC is just a rating.

Real wood is Green

As the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) writes on its website; “There are no Federal standards or definitions that govern the use of the term ‘hypoallergenic.’ The term means whatever a particular company chooses, i.e. how they market the product. It is a marketing term in that it provides no real information about the product and how it performs. Our unfinished floors can be toxic or hypoallergenic, the finish is up to you.

Monocoat by Rubio- The green finish

Flooring and allergies starts with zero voc finish such as monocoat
7″ Rustic Caribbean Heart Pine.

Rubio Monocoat uses a unique molecular bonding technology to adhere to the topmost fibers of the wood it is applied to. Rubio Monocoat unique molecular bonding technology also allows for a one-coat finish. This means there is no need to continually apply oil or build up layers of polyurethane like with traditional finishes.

Carpet is the worst source for allergens

Carpet is king, of our landfills. The EPA estimates that there is 15 lbs of carpet for every citizen of the United States, in our landfills. It does not decompose quickly or even safely, and no it cannot be recycled, no matter what you read. Try to find a center that takes your carpet, not gonna happen.

Laminate and LVT

Laminate and Vinyl are the fastest growing components of our landfills. It’s difficult to quantify what chemicals, will leach from laminates once they hit the landfill versus the emissions if placed in an incinerator. To put it simply, this stuff doesn’t decompose, because of all the chemicals and glues, the material never breaks down organically.

What flooring is best for allergy sufferers?

Solid wood floors are the only true green, hypoallergenic flooring choice.

What type of floor is the worst for allergy sufferers?

Carpet is the toughest to clean while manufactures have been fined for having too much formaldehyde making a bunch of people very sick.

How can you tell if Formaldehyde was used in your own floor?

You can check if formaldehyde was used in your floor by looking for ULEF (ultra-low emitting formaldehyde) or NAUF (no added urea formaldehyde) labels. This is not hypoallergenic flooring!

What is Laminate?

Laminate is a thin layer of wood-color plastic, adhered to a composite. The processes use a variety of chemicals including formaldehyde. What is Laminate? How about what it is not, it is not green; in fact, it is the opposite of green. Laminate has a huge carbon footprint based on the manufacturing process, which can include dangerous chemicals in the manufacturing process. Laminate is not renewable or recyclable and every bit of it will end up in a landfill.

Southern Pine Durability

Misconceptions, Misdirections and Misinformation, Wood Floor Shopping

Southern Pine durability should not have to be in question, look around and find out the price for reclaimed heart pine, locally. Southern Pine handles moisture and temperature changes better than most species, we build decks and docks out of it!

Southern Pine Durability is legendary.

You have probably seen the evidence of Southern Pine durability, such as Antique Reclaimed Heart Pine. Ever seen a 100-year-old house with pine floors? What about the price and beauty of Antique Reclaimed Heart Pine. Think about it, Antique Oak looks a lot like new oak in that, unlike pine, it does not get better looking with age. Southern Pine purchased today will outlive the house, only to be reclaimed one day and sold for triple today’s price. From an investment standpoint, that ain’t bad.

Southern Pine Durability is the reason we build everything with it!

Is pine would too be soft to be a floor? Are you asking if pine is durable? I guess so I just hear a lot about pine denting and scratching very easily. That really depends more so up on the finish than it does the wood unless you are talking about something extremely hard like Walnut. But the thing about mature pine, the character and color variations hide the imperfections. It’s part of its appeal, without a doubt, the ease of finish and ease of fixing kid tracks.

Southern Pine durability

Is pine to soft?

The Janka Hardness of Caribbean Heart pine is 1280, Heart Pine 1250 and Southern Yellow Pine 690. Now those numbers, two of them anyway are very misleading. The 690 score of Southern Yellow Pine takes in all the species (11) within, what is, really a description and not a species. Time, climate, and time; that is what makes pine hard durable and gorgeous. Buyer beware. Ask the question; “does your 50% heart content ad mean 50% or better, 50% is max or does it mean, and this is happening today that 50% of the boards will have heart content.

Pinterest

Janka Rating & Southern Pine Durability

If you are measuring Southern Pine durability remember not all pine is created equal, furthermore, the durability doesn’t depend on the Janka Rating. And this rating only rates Yellow Pine, i.e., Southern Yellow Pine, not the (standalone) species. A dozen species make up the description, Southern Yellow Pine. And for the record, Eastern White Pine is not one of them. Durability is about handling stress such as temperature and humidity, moisture is the killer for wood floors.

Moisture and wood flooring

Moisture and wood are not friends. However, real wood flooring can go through a flood and dry out, the same cannot be said for laminate or LVT. Forget about this “waterproof” term you see when shopping at boxes and liquidation stores. Waterproof, really, it is proof not resistant?  Real wood with the right finish creates longevity and durability only ‘engineered by mother nature. For the record and to repeat again, Southern Pine, on the microscopic level, is more porous than most hardwoods which allows moisture to “come and go” without swelling, for example.

Engineered floors opposite of durable

Does anyone remember when the words engineered and flooring were put together? Probably not, but engineered flooring has long been a product, or bi product of solid wood or prefinished solid wood. Originally, it was the veneers or leftovers that mill works shops used to create engineered flooring. Today, it is the direct opposite in our industry. Crazy warranties claim to be waterproof and have fueled the single use floor cover craze. We ship of timber to Asia which returns as slivers, furthermore all of it ends up in a landfill.

Southern Pine durability and the finish

What is the best finish for your pine floors? The question was asked so often early on we decided we needed to test them all, or it seemed like it. We love clear and simple, but if you need color – go Monocoat and you cannot go wrong. We keep it simple, Monocoat by Rubio. Directions, sand, apply, dry.  Beware of local installers who claim to be pine professionals, in Maine for example. No offense ME, and shout out to clients but you guys are not a hot bed of Southern Yellow Pine experts. The best pine finish for you may not be the same as mine! What are our goals? Protection, maintaining finish, aesthetics or all of the above, of course we want it all. Monocoat has won our loyalty not exclusively but when you “gotta pick one sizes fits all”.

Maryland

Wood Floor Shopping

Maryland and Southern Yellow Pine Direct have been a perfect match since 2014 when we launched the Online Mill concept. The state understands the versatility of Southern Pine, from the beach styles to very early American, the classic pine, MD seems to “get it”.  Of course our Beach floors are popular, but 3 to 5″ Heart Pine remains the favorite. SYP Direct markets directly to residents using our network of installers and Do It Yourself clients all over the state.

Maryland customer #2 Southern Knotty Pine wide planksAbout Maryland

Maryland is a Mid-Atlantic state that is defined by its abundant waterways and coastlines on the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean. Its largest city, Baltimore, has a long history as a major seaport. Sixteen of Maryland’s twenty-three counties, as well as the city of Baltimore, border the tidal waters of the Chesapeake Bay. MD has a combined total more than 4,000 miles of shoreline making it a perfect state for Coastal or Beach Style floors.

Beach & Coastal Floors

Are Chesapeake Coastal floors different from most, are they Whitewashed? When you step into a house on a MD beach, you immediately know you are in a whole different world, whitewashed or otherwise. The rooms are open and airy, the furniture is casual. Colors may be pastels or lighter colors and distressed for age.

Local Source for Pine

Maryland consistently ranks in our top 10 by state when measuring total sales. As we say,  we are the best local source for pine no matter where your zip code. Of course SYP Direct is not local to MD the way Crab cakes or the Ravens. On the contrary, we are your best source for the best pine at the best prices. In fact, Longleaf pine, the slower growing version which gives us New Heart Pine, is not found locally in commercially viable stands. All the pine grown today is the faster growing Loblolly species, great for construction but lacks the colors and character of trees three times their age.

More about SYP Direct

Southern Yellow Pine Direct is the only A+ rated mill to order online flooring store.  Our company wants to add value to your home with a forever floor, not a floor cover! Southern Yellow Pine Direct is the homeowner’s resource for the best pine flooring on the market. However, we are so much more than just flooring. Custom stairs, lap siding, gap siding, post, and beams, shipped directly to your job site. SYP Direct works with your contractor if you are simply purchasing your own materials. Do not get stuck with ‘bundled’ services, finish and installation does not have to include the floors. Say no to bundled services, contract your own floors. SYP Direct provides all the support you need to convince or find a new installer.

Sustainable Timber

Misconceptions, Misdirections and Misinformation

Sustainable timber, i.e., timber that has been harvested and replenished which may occur naturally or farmed.  ‘Sustainable Forestry’, however, involves more than just planting a tree when you cut one down. Sustainable timber management or forestry means doing no ecological damage to the surrounding environment.

Plant a tree

To those who want to help stop Global Warming- buy a real wood floor and plant a tree.

Healthy, sustainably harvested timber creates forest that become more resistant to wildfire, insects, disease, and the impacts of climate change. Like so many things, the message that the timber industry and sustainable forestry are contributing to climate change has gotten distorted. When you consider the replacement products we use instead of wood, i.e., petroleum-based vinyl, composites, and plastic the eco-friendly product is obviously real wood. What about concrete and steel? “As conservationists, we make building materials that store carbon and require far fewer fossil fuels to produce compared to steel and concrete.” (Forest2Market.com September 2022).

Sustainable timber means green

As trees grow, they absorb carbon dioxide CO2 from the atmosphere and release oxygen. We learned this in junior high. Not only do trees sequester or hold carbon, but they also put it to use. Great but what happens when you turn this tree into a floor? Wood flooring is about 50 percent carbon by dry weight. Wood products continue to store much of this carbon indefinitely. In the case of buildings, the carbon is kept out of the atmosphere for the lifetime of the structure—or longer if the wood is reclaimed and used to manufacture other products.

Plant more trees

In national parks and designated wilderness areas, the federal government is prohibited by law from sustainably harvesting and replanting trees. According to U.S. Forest Service-Forest Inventory and Analysis data, lands set aside from active forest management – such as parks and wilderness – serve as a carbon source because trees are dying at faster rates than they are growing.

Sustainable timber create floors that last forever

No matter what else you hear while shopping, solid 3/4 floors should outlive the house, i.e., be salvaged one day. On the other hand, all ‘floor covers’ with very few exceptions, everything else ends up in a landfill. Seriously, the bathroom counter-top you see here was produced by a novice salvaged decking.

No clear cutting

To be clear, we are not talking about clear cutting or harvesting non sustainable forest. Anti-forestry activists cling to the flawed assumption that old trees will sequester and store carbon. As if old trees are immortal and should be forever untouched. Not so fast! The science is that younger trees sequester carbon at higher rates than older trees, yes. Even worse, when older trees die, they emit carbon and methane.

Failing to clear dead trees causes wildfires

Conservationists are not to be confused with anti-forestry activists, even though the media often gives them that label. Anti-forestry activists reject Indigenous knowledge and experience that comes from thousands of years of managing forests, while raising millions of dollars to perpetuate the idea that the United States risk deforestation. Far from scarce, many western landscapes, “have overstocked stands with more trees than the forests can support”.

Nashville

Wood Floor Shopping

Nashville Tennessee, an ultra modern southern city, but as the birth place of country music it is southern first and foremost. At one time there was a pine flooring mill in every small town across Tennessee. Today, because of Southern Pine durability and dimensional stability pine builds houses, flooring an afterthought. The pine acreage once slow growing Southern Pine is now farmed using quick method which does not allow Heartwood to develop. Over the past 3 or 4 years we noticed a big increase in both homeowners and builders in Nashville calling for something to substitute for Antique Reclaimed Heart Pine.

View On Airbnb2 Bedroom Loft on Chattanooga's North Shore

New Heart Pine is not “new” it is just not reclaimed, yet.

The word new simply indicated it is not reclaimed Heart Pine. On the contrary, our timber is taking from private landholders in small batches. Finding Heart Pine in Nashville requires you get past the massive hardwood mills in your area, not to mention the spec houses being built. However, historic restorations, renovations and or homeowner driven new construction allows for choice. Nashville, congratulations on your amazing growth, let us help you add value to all those remodels and restorations.

The best substitue for Reclaimed Heart Pine

What are you looking at, $4.00 or $24?

Caribbean Heart Pine or Antique

Does anyone remember the commercial “is it live or is it Memorex”? It is what I think of when I email this photo to customers making the decision to buy age, or create it Caribbean Heart Pine. And that word create should jump out at you because that always means more money. How so? Antique Reclaimed Heart Pine needs nothing but sand and poly, or clear coat. On the other hand, Caribbean Heart Pine, while it looks great; in order to match the age of good reclaimed floors requires experience. Adding age requires adding distress to the edges and or face of the floors. Wire brushing and “French Bleed”, darkening and distressing the edges are both excellent ways to create the illusion of age.

Nashville Investors

Rule number one, buy real wood. Real wood is an investment, everything else just a lease. Homeowner equity becomes shareholder profits. A product is something you buy and use then replace, an investment provides some form of return.

Jason Howard Investment Flooring Post 2018.

Solid Heart Pine floors are an investment not a product

Nashville is no different from any other city, 95% of the flooring professionals push veneers or worse, composites. First of all, not all engineered (veneers) are all bad, but unless they have a 4MM wear layer, or better, they cannot be refinished. Unfortunately, years of carpet are now being deposited in your landfills with the next waive being composites.

Nashville

The footprint of fake wood

If  you listen to most “environmental” warriors, logging and timber is the equivalent of fossil fuels when accessing a carbon footprint. This is ridiculous. Managed timber doesn’t lend itself to wildfires. And real wood doesn’t end up in the landfill. If every house only had one floor over its lifetime, how many installations would that save?  Real wood floors will outlive your house. In fact, one day they will be reclaimed or salvaged as they are reinvented a century later. Try that with laminate.

Why do people buy ‘single use’ floors? A product designed with planned obsolescence ridiculous promises and useless warranties. Manufactures and their distributors have four conventions per year and one huge one just to talk about all the new and latest technology that they are going to sell homeowners. All of this is to perpetuate a population of consumers and salespeople buying into a false premise, fake is better than real.

sypdirect.net, August 2022

Nashville do not settle

View On Airbnb2 Bedroom Loft on Chattanooga’s North Shore

Nashville do not settle for a flooring lease, buy one that will outlive your home and one day be reclaimed. It is not too expensive, not at all, but you will hear the opposite when shopping. Trust logic and get the floor you want, buy real wood.

Florida homeowners, as you consider how to replace your floor do not settle. Do not settle for fake expensive floor covers. SYP Direct specializes in homeowners, in fact, we become your advocate in the face of misinformation about solid real wood floors.

Writing about our history in Florida must start on Sanibel Island because, well, look at the floor! 1×10 wide plank Heart Pine, ¾ x 8 7/8 in 12’ lengths. We delivered 4400 square feet, in the spring of 2014 and these photos have proven to be priceless. The finish is a tung oil blend and wow does it show off the patina of these amazing floors. Sanibel Island, it does not have to be Heart Pine, call us for White Oak, Red Oak, Walnut, Hickory – unfinished & prefinished solid and unfinished engineered.

Prefinished or finish to order

Prefinished is different from a SYP Direct ‘finish to order floor’, custom is another word you can use. One is manufactured and then sold, the other is sold and then manufactured. The difference? Lengths and choice are the big two because they make it custom, unique because the homeowner made the choices. You want a 7” Rustic Heart Pine floor finished in BONA high traffic, in all 10’ boards, no problem. And, not expensive when compared to your local offerings (apples to apples), no matter where you live.  However, they are more expensive that prefinished floors which brings us to another unique option we provide our customers, access.

Tampa has an amazing hardwoods artist

SYP Direct sells directly to you while giving you all the information you need to find the right professional in your area. Why is this so important? Because the site finishing hardwoods (unfinished) can be done by the hour or by artist. Here is one example of a Florida Artist.

1×4 Clear Southern Pine

Our favorite Finishes, Wood Floor Shopping

Clear aka C and Better Southern Pine

Clear pine is tricky, how so? Well true C grade looks like our main picture, without any vertical grain or heartwood. However, you have Clear Heart Pine is not not C grade, but may or may not be vertical grain. Furthermore, Souther Pine may be quartersawn, producing vertical grain without heartwood.

SYP Direct is proud to offer our 1×4 Clear Southern Pine for $3.45 per square foot. Now that the price thing is out of the way, let me tell you more about the grade. If you are curious why Southern Pine is desribed as a 1×4 when it is actually neither one of those numbers, blame dimensional lumber. The terminology is what it is, but remember not all Southern Pine is created equally.

More about our Clear Southern Pine

Clear Southern Pine has a formal name, C & Better and it has “altered” names such as Select or Prime. Our C & Better is available in vertical grain (live sawn) Heart Pine, which is actually hand selected or just normal knot free Southern Pine. Vertical grain only available in 1×4, C & Better Southern Pine in 1 x 6 and 1 x 8, which are 5 1/8 and 6 7/8 respectively, both are cheaper than the 1×4 FYI.

What is vertical grain?

Vertical grain is not quartersawn, but all quartersawn has vertical grain among other variations. Ok, forget that stuff, vertical grain heart pine is the middle of the tree- our 1 x 4 is no exception. Can vertical grain heart pine have knots?  Yes, but they will be very tiny, pin knots if any.

Is it Kiln dried?

Misconceptions, Misdirections and Misinformation, Customer Bill of Rights

We use 2 step, air and then computerized steam. “Is it Kiln dried to 6% like White Oak”? We get this a whole bunch even from installers, mostly up north. (joke, sort of). All of our floors are kiln dried to 10% or just under. Yes, Oak is 6% but Heart Pine is not White Oak. At a molecular level pine allows moisture to both ‘come and go’ without losing integrity, not so with many hardwoods. Kiln dried with relief grooves on the back. Our boards are precision milled; tongue and groove with straight edges and ends every board is barefoot ready.

Is is Kiln dried using air?

Air-drying lumber simple means to stack lumber and expose it to the outdoors. Depending on the species of wood and desired moisture content the air-drying process could take several months to almost a year. Make sure to properly stack the wood for sufficient air circulation and acclimation.

Is it Kiln dried to reduce moisture?

Kiln drying is a standard practice in wood production mills and serves to efficiently bring green lumber moisture levels down to “workable” range–moisture content levels that will not end in the myriad of problems that can be caused by excess moisture levels in wood.

What Is Kiln-Dried Wood?

Kiln-dried wood is wood that has been dried in an oven (kiln). With a kiln, you can control the environment such as temperature, humidity, and steam levels for a set period. Allowing you to dry wood to the desired moisture content faster than air-drying.
