“This project, on paper, should have been a real challenge: The floor is about 25 feet from the water’s edge so there is plenty of humidity in the summer, and in the winter the temperatures can plunge well below zero and cold air is dry air! Also, the floor is over a crawl space. So, lots of moisture change in this location. i went with a historical look using antique ‘hand-cut’ nails face-nailed in counter-sunk holes. State and City “tours”

This is by no means a complete list in fact we have not done a new one in a couple of years just because things have gotten much busier but there are some cool stories posted, with a lot of cool ones missing. We once delivered a floor that had to be at the house it exact time because there was a birthday present, please do not ask us to ever do that again. We have a wall used in a play on Broadway, the PA Jr Ballet Stage, a 60,000 square foot CT project (2022), a wall in car dealership (amazing) and a ceiling in one founders of huge box store. In Martha’s Vineyard we have 3 floors, but they will never admit it. Charleston SC loves SYP Direct and we have warehouse (prefinished manufacturer) in North Carolina. We are everywhere but we do not have the overhead that cost you money and gets you a cheap floor.

If you want to find Southern Yellow Pine Direct customers, as long as you are not in Alaska, we have at least one in your state, which would be Hawaii. North and South Carolina, New England, the South including Virginia (joke) and west to Colorado with all the “top” border states such as Montana on the list.

Kentucky quick fact: the state has more navigable miles of waterways than any other state in the union. Probably not what you think about when you think about the Bluegrass state, right? Basketball tops my list when I think about Kentucky. As an LSU alumni and Louisiana “boy”, I wonder; How many times did Kentucky beat LSU in the SEC tournament, all of them? OK, not every time but awfully close! If that doesn’t top your list, how about that little horse race they hold every year.

Frankfort is the capital city of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, but Louisville is the largest city. Louisville is home to the Kentucky Derby, the renowned horse race held at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May. Dubbed “The Run for the Roses,” stemming from the blanket of roses draped over the winner. It is also known in the United States as “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports” or “The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports” because of its approximate duration. The Kentucky Derby has run uninterrupted since 1875. Even with the Olympics and major professional sports leagues canceled at those points, the Derby, Preakness, and Belmont took place during the Great Depression and both World Wars.

In Owensboro our customer used tongue and groove on his walls, running the boards vertical, as shown above. “Here is the finished building. I built a bar and workbench (with leftovers) also. Buying Solid Wood Flooring? You have certain rights!

You have the right to real

First, it must be real wood, a floor not a floor cover that will be thrown away one day. Nobody calls carpet a hardwood, but it outlasts most LVT and all laminate. Solid wood, i.e., engineered by Mother Nature! – It is a shame that we even use the same word, hardwood to describe both real and fake flooring. Laminate Hardwoods, the term has no meaning. It is not wood, much less hard. Laminate, LVT and cheap (less than 4mm wear layer) engineered flooring all ends up in the same landfill.

Long boards are not a luxury

Long lengths- When did trees get so short? 95% of all prefinished hardwoods are sold as 7’ nested bundles, meaning box. The average board will be under 30”, all chopped up is what you get. Not the case with our finish to order heart pine, we run long boards up to 10’ with an average over 7’; 80% of boards are 8’ and up. In fact, we offer a version with all 12’ boards; however, the shipping and packaging becomes more expensive. Why long boards are so cool? They look like they cost a fortune because everyone else has chopped up short boards.

You have the right to the truth

You cannot refinish engineered wood with less than 4 mm wear layer, warranties are, in general worthless and nothing is waterproof except water. These are topics that, of course, generate questions; and the answers should be given in the form of true statements not marketing garbage. You will find that with each question answered, the truth becomes clear. Single use floor covers mean repeat business and that is what supports the industry. Nobody wants you to get a solid real hardwood because you will not need another one, nor will the person who moves in after you. Solid hardwood flooring increases the selling price by up to 10% because the new owners can re-finish rather than repurchase.

South Carolina Southern Pine and the French Quarter of Charleston, what? As a native of Louisiana, the writer understood historic restorations a from monetary point of view. Charleston customers and builders changed our perspective. Charleston does not keep history alive for tourism, they love this city. Restorations are an obligation, a birthright almost and monetary concerns secondary at best. Did you know that Charleston is not the capital of South Carolina? Nope, and New Orleans is not the capital of Louisiana. Charleston was at one time, long ago and New Orleans never wanted (state) politics to get in the way of the party.

South Carolina is a southeastern U.S. state known for its shoreline of subtropical beaches and marsh like sea islands. Welcome to Southern Yellow Pine Direct trip through Texas, “Goats, Wine and Heart Pine” or “Deep in the Heart Pine of Texas, we like both names. Many of you may not understand the pride which exists in residents from Abilene to Corpus, “bigger is better and everything’s bigger in Texas”, “Don’t Mess with Texas”, it’s real. Do not take our word for it, visit the Hill Country and see what Texas is doin’ with wine. What goes good with BBQ from Rudy’s, a red I assume but plan on finding out.

Texans like real wood, we only sell real wood ‘engineered by God! Since we began publishing post such as Made in America and Investment flooring, all about real wood our Texas business has taken off. And we begin our tour in Paige Texas, 90 miles from Austin as we visit a creative Texan that certainly understand real wood. Peter M. Peter M purchased 1600 square feet of wide plank Caribbean Heart Pine flooring. Along with the CHP, Peter bought several pallets of v joint (groove) utility grade heart pine, for the walls and ceiling. And of course, he did this knowing the challenges of installing that volume in those lengths, not to mention waste factor. So before emailing about cabin grade, please know we cannot possibility provide our coverage or satisfaction guarantee, you better buy plenty!

About Pete’s Paige Heart Pine TX project

About the project, the sub-floor is 3/4 CDX plywood treated with a Borax based mixture, for fire and water protection. Next the sub-floor sealed using an outdoor deck finish, before covered in #15 felt, to control any noise. Peter told us ” he could not be happier with the way they turned out and that “the installation could not have been easier because the quality of the mill work. The quality of preparations, installation and finish are evident in the finished product, we love it”.

Is Texas in the South?

Ask most northern folks they immediately say yes. However, ask a Texan and the answers vary with one constant, nothing compares to Texas. Somewhere around 1977 the writer asked his uncle the question, to which the reply came “yes but don’t tell them cause they don’t think so”. The answer is yes Texas is a part of the South but Texas is still Texas! From diversity to the economy no other ‘southern’ state can compare with it. However, we had a few more questions about the Longhorn state.

Is Austin a part of Texas ?

Many argue that Austin is to Texas as New Orleans is to Louisiana, like a “whole other state”. Of course, Austin is the state capital of Texas, an inland city bordering the Hill Country region. Home to the University of Texas flagship campus, Austin is known for its eclectic live-music scene centered around country, blues and indie rock. The consensus seems to be that yes, Austin is in the Texas Hill Country. The Texas Hill Country is a geographic region of Central and South Texas, forming the southeast part of the Edwards Plateau. The Hill Country plays host to a diverse population across 25 counties. Austin and San Antonio are the two metropolitan areas, each worthy a visit for sure. San Antonio with a population of 1.4 million is now larger than Dallas where we end our trip through Texas. But first, wine country is our vacation stop before any more business.

Did you know Hill Country was Wine Country?

Texas Wine Country? SYP Direct did the 15 things we did not know about Indiana and now we have ‘did you know the fact about Texas.’. How about that 1.7 million tourists visit wine country, every year. Not impressed, those visitors and wine sales generated over 13 billion dollars of economic impact throughout the hill country. SYP Direct is headed to Fredericksburg. “The Burg” , a city in central Texas, is known for its wineries and B&B’s.

During the SYP Direct “tour” we searched for Bed and Breakfast in the area and found the City on the Hill at Spring Creek. What caught our eye? Look around their website we found our Southern Pine in the Hill Country! Seeing the pictures of the Cabins, we knew exactly where we were going to stay. Something about that place felt like home, later we found out it was the people, and the place. We met the nicest most down to earth people who made both of us feel like part of the family. We had a fantastic weekend touring the wine and sampling the wine country. Fredericksburg and the whole area is just a cool place to visit but our trip would not be the same without staying at City on the Hill at Spring Creek, 100% thumbs up.

So why is a flooring site writing about Goats in the wine country of Texas? Well sometimes stuff is so good that you want to tell other people about it. Everyone is silky smooth thanks to those cute little Nigerian Dwarf Goats, which you can visit as you shop or stay over. My spouse loved the boots, and boots are very important to her, I mean us. One of the keys when attempting to match an existing pine floor, the right materials. Sounds simple enough until you realize the amazing things mother nature can do with time. Have you ever seen a hundred-year-old floor below the existing finish? The short answer, they get better looking with age; meaning each time you refinish it, the patina and colors are darker. Therefore, the question how to match an existing pine floor hinges on choosing the correct materials, i.e., grain pattern, grain type, Knots (if so sizes), and the amount (if any) of heart pine.
