grades

Home - grades

Grades of pine flooring depends on the old adage, “consider the source”.  The grading system for retail unfinished and certainly prefinshed floors do not favor the buyer. #1 , #2 and #3 mean nothing without understanding the main product and source of materials. 95% of pine is fast growing Loblolly which looks completely different than mature Longleaf Pine.

Length and waste factor

If you do not factor all cost, length, waste factor and shipping you do not have a comparison. Our #2 has the exact waste factor or our prime, we are very unique in that fact. Which doesn’t matter unless people 1. find us and 2. understand what we are selling!

Southern Pine Durability

Misconceptions, Misdirections and Misinformation, Wood Floor Shopping

Southern Pine durability should not have to be in question, look around and find out the price for reclaimed heart pine, locally. Southern Pine handles moisture and temperature changes better than most species, we build decks and docks out of it!

Southern Pine Durability is legendary.

You have probably seen the evidence of Southern Pine durability, such as Antique Reclaimed Heart Pine. Ever seen a 100-year-old house with pine floors? What about the price and beauty of Antique Reclaimed Heart Pine. Think about it, Antique Oak looks a lot like new oak in that, unlike pine, it does not get better looking with age. Southern Pine purchased today will outlive the house, only to be reclaimed one day and sold for triple today’s price. From an investment standpoint, that ain’t bad.

Southern Pine Durability is the reason we build everything with it!

Is pine would too be soft to be a floor? Are you asking if pine is durable? I guess so I just hear a lot about pine denting and scratching very easily. That really depends more so up on the finish than it does the wood unless you are talking about something extremely hard like Walnut. But the thing about mature pine, the character and color variations hide the imperfections. It’s part of its appeal, without a doubt, the ease of finish and ease of fixing kid tracks.

Southern Pine durability

Is pine to soft?

The Janka Hardness of Caribbean Heart pine is 1280, Heart Pine 1250 and Southern Yellow Pine 690. Now those numbers, two of them anyway are very misleading. The 690 score of Southern Yellow Pine takes in all the species (11) within, what is, really a description and not a species. Time, climate, and time; that is what makes pine hard durable and gorgeous. Buyer beware. Ask the question; “does your 50% heart content ad mean 50% or better, 50% is max or does it mean, and this is happening today that 50% of the boards will have heart content.

Pinterest

Janka Rating & Southern Pine Durability

If you are measuring Southern Pine durability remember not all pine is created equal, furthermore, the durability doesn’t depend on the Janka Rating. And this rating only rates Yellow Pine, i.e., Southern Yellow Pine, not the (standalone) species. A dozen species make up the description, Southern Yellow Pine. And for the record, Eastern White Pine is not one of them. Durability is about handling stress such as temperature and humidity, moisture is the killer for wood floors.

Moisture and wood flooring

Moisture and wood are not friends. However, real wood flooring can go through a flood and dry out, the same cannot be said for laminate or LVT. Forget about this “waterproof” term you see when shopping at boxes and liquidation stores. Waterproof, really, it is proof not resistant?  Real wood with the right finish creates longevity and durability only ‘engineered by mother nature. For the record and to repeat again, Southern Pine, on the microscopic level, is more porous than most hardwoods which allows moisture to “come and go” without swelling, for example.

Engineered floors opposite of durable

Does anyone remember when the words engineered and flooring were put together? Probably not, but engineered flooring has long been a product, or bi product of solid wood or prefinished solid wood. Originally, it was the veneers or leftovers that mill works shops used to create engineered flooring. Today, it is the direct opposite in our industry. Crazy warranties claim to be waterproof and have fueled the single use floor cover craze. We ship of timber to Asia which returns as slivers, furthermore all of it ends up in a landfill.

Southern Pine durability and the finish

What is the best finish for your pine floors? The question was asked so often early on we decided we needed to test them all, or it seemed like it. We love clear and simple, but if you need color – go Monocoat and you cannot go wrong. We keep it simple, Monocoat by Rubio. Directions, sand, apply, dry.  Beware of local installers who claim to be pine professionals, in Maine for example. No offense ME, and shout out to clients but you guys are not a hot bed of Southern Yellow Pine experts. The best pine finish for you may not be the same as mine! What are our goals? Protection, maintaining finish, aesthetics or all of the above, of course we want it all. Monocoat has won our loyalty not exclusively but when you “gotta pick one sizes fits all”.

Amazing Southern Pine colors and character shown in our samples boards

Heartwood, what is it?

Heart Pine

Heartwood

South Carolina example of heart content of Knotty Pine from SYP Direct

The price of New Heart Pine floors should depend on the amount of heart content on each board. Why? Heartwood is harder than the rest of the pine, we measure hardness using the Janka scale.

Heartwood and the Janka hardness scale

The Janka rating of New Heart Pine, is 1,240 lbs. (564 kg.), by comparison Northern Red Oak’s value is 1,290 lbs. (585 kg.). Full disclosure a Janka rating is hard to measure when the percentage is not 85% or more, as with our Caribbean Heart Pine. However, we see the color represents two desirable qualities in a pine floor, age and hardness.

Heartwood, commonly known as heart content consist of heart and sapwood. A good example is our character grade Heart Pine which has more knots and therefore more sapwood than a clear grade. Heart pine without sapwood will usually have more vertical grain, with tones that are more brown than the red found in sapwood. It should be noted that sapwood becomes as hard as heart pine as it is exposed to oxygen (dies), so the stability and hardness are equal no matter the percentage of heart to sap. Heartwood is where you find the character and color variation that makes pine floors desirable. The variations in sapwood and heartwood provide color changes that scream character.

What is Southern Pine – the tree which gives us heart pine

Southern Pine is not a species but rather a geographic marker from Texas to Virginia. The word yellow indicates the ‘hard’ pine species of Southern Pine, so yellow means hard and white soft. Loblolly the fast-growing species is what you farmed from Texas to the east coast. Alabama pine serves as the raw materials for our mature new Heart Pine floors. Alabama Heart Pine, while new is 4 -5 times older (more mature) than anything you are getting locally, no kidding. Farm raised Loblolly pine, fast growing pine, represents 95% of all pine harvested. For more information on the industry, i.e., what happens from tree to your job site, call SYP Direct today.

Heart content and Heartwood

Heartpine is a grade given to flooring with more than 50% visible heart content on the face over every board. Sapwood is alive and Heartwood is dead, what does that mean? Heartwood has less moisture than sapwood, until the Kiln. However, over time the tree “promotes” layers of sapwood to heartwood status. As the sapwood  stops flowing through selected layers of the tree (dying) it becomes as hard as heart pine.  The tree pores fill up with organic matter and the cell walls change color, ultimately becoming dryer and stronger to form Heartwood layers. In terms we can understand; sapwood becomes heartwood with time and a good Kiln.

Heartwood is function of age and species

What is Heartwood?

explains what is heartwood with visual example of percentage heartwood

#2 Knotty up to 40% Heartwood

Be honest, did you realize these pictures were #2 Knotty Pine? Does it look anything like your local pine or box store stuff? No, and the reason is simply the percentage of heart pine in our #2 grade. Think about this, you can create a heart pine floor from our #2 grade, with just a little bit of planning. You simply sort for high heart content and strategically place those boards in high traffic areas of your house.  Imagine creating a “Heart Pine” living room, with Knotty Pine in the bedrooms, which is one way to go.

More about US

With an A+ rating from the BBB, it is no surprise that we never misrepresent our floors in any way shape or form. #2 Knotty Pine, the perfect example of telling the 100% truth about the grade. 1×4 Clear Southern Pine

Our favorite Finishes, Wood Floor Shopping

Clear aka C and Better Southern Pine

Clear pine is tricky, how so? Well true C grade looks like our main picture, without any vertical grain or heartwood. However, you have Clear Heart Pine is not not C grade, but may or may not be vertical grain. Furthermore, Souther Pine may be quartersawn, producing vertical grain without heartwood.

SYP Direct is proud to offer our 1×4 Clear Southern Pine for $3.45 per square foot. Now that the price thing is out of the way, let me tell you more about the grade. If you are curious why Southern Pine is desribed as a 1×4 when it is actually neither one of those numbers, blame dimensional lumber. The terminology is what it is, but remember not all Southern Pine is created equally.

More about our Clear Southern Pine

Clear Southern Pine has a formal name, C & Better and it has “altered” names such as Select or Prime. Our C & Better is available in vertical grain (live sawn) Heart Pine, which is actually hand selected or just normal knot free Southern Pine. Vertical grain only available in 1×4, C & Better Southern Pine in 1 x 6 and 1 x 8, which are 5 1/8 and 6 7/8 respectively, both are cheaper than the 1×4 FYI.

What is vertical grain?

Vertical grain is not quartersawn, but all quartersawn has vertical grain among other variations. Ok, forget that stuff, vertical grain heart pine is the middle of the tree- our 1 x 4 is no exception. Can vertical grain heart pine have knots?  Yes, but they will be very tiny, pin knots if any.

1×6 #2 Southern New Heart Pine

Knotty Pine

1×6 #2 Southern New Heart Pine

First of all, a 1 x 6 #2 Southern New Heart Pine grade is very deceptive desription. It is neither 3/4 nor 6″; as for the #2 Southern New Heart Pine that might be the most deceptive of all because it is not a defected grade like lumber yard #2 Knotty. To find out more read Southern Yellow Pine is not a species and or What is Heartwood?

Pictures of #2 Grade Southern aka Knotty Pine

Each photo you see on this page is our #2 Knotty Southern Yellow Pine.  And without a doubt, the 1×6 is the most popular width, hands down. The value of these floors is found in the character, as evidenced by color. The colors, a result of heart and sapwood are the character and variation we want from the species. Of course, we offer select, prime and clear floors- we just like the knots a little better.

#2 based on lack of heartwood

A board with less than 50% heart content on the face, it becomes a #2 grade, not because of defects but lack of proximity to the center of tree. Our Heart Pine floors range 50-80% heart content with more narrow grades having a higher percentage of heart to sap.

Rustic in eye of beholder

Knotty Pine

What is #2 Southern Yellow Knotty Pine?

Simple, it is a generic term for pine with knots, not a big surprise. What may surprise you, Knotty Pine is not a grade. #2 SYP is not a true grade and differs from mill to mill, i.e., floors or lumber. Lumber mills sort based on defects; knots included. But when a mill produces flooring, Heart Pine flooring, it is sorted based on the amount of visible heartwood, not defects. An astounding 95% of pine floors are produced by dimensional lumber mills using Loblolly or similar farmed species. Age creates not only gorgeous colors and character, durability and stability.

More about Rustic #2 Southern Pine

Southern Yellow #2 Knotty Pine differs from mill to mill depending on the end product. For example, we produce Heart Pine, therefore our #2 knotty pine simply lacks the heart content. Distance from the middle of the tree, not defects, determine our #2 grade. Southern Yellow Pine Direct tells you truth about your options.

More about Rustic Flooring from SYP Direct

Rustic floors, or rustic by definition refers to simplicity, rural or country style. What about flooring? Do knots automatically indicated a “rustic” style or simplicity? The word comes from Latin Rusticus or Rus, “to be country”, or Shabby Chic as we call it today.

10″ Heart Pine

Heart Pine

1 x 10 Heart Pine is the widest of our wide plank New Heart Pine. Remember when you see 1x10x12, those numbers are neither 1″ nor 10″, the 12′ is accurate. Only with pine, new pine for that matter.  Southern Yellow Pine is not one species, actually there are dozen varieties but Loblolly and Longleaf are the two that matter. Loblolly is grown and farms, sold in box stores and offered at your lumber yard as 2×4’s or tongue and groove. Our Longleaf timber is taken from North Alabama from private landowners and very small batches. A Longleaf pine require 150 to reach maturity whereas farm grown pine will be harvested every 30 years.

3/4 Solid Wide Plank 10″ Heart Pine

In 2016, we shipped 4000 square feet of 1x 10 Heart Pine to the Richmond Virginia area for a new construction project. At the time we had no idea the customer would generate what most at SYP Direct believe to be our “best looking floor”. Professional photography, an amazing site finish in a 5 million dollar home, it does make for a great picture.  The good news, if you know how to finish Heart Pine you can create this exact floor for much less than you might think. At somewhere around $3.50 per square foot, unfinished this 1 x 10 Heart Pine can become your million dollar floor.

Heart Pine or Knotty Pine floors sounds like you are choosing between knots and no knots or at least fewer. Not true, New Heart Pine has knots in the 50-80% grade. When you look at descriptions, you will see percentage ranges such as 50-80% or 85% plus. These percentages tell us how much heartwood is visible on the face of each board.  A board with less than 50% heart content on the face, it becomes a #2 grade, not because of defects but lack of proximity to the center of tree. Heart Pine ranges 50-80% heart content with more narrow grades having a higher percentage of heart to sap. For information about our standard grades, check out our floors.

Waste Factor

Finish and Install

How much extra wood flooring should I order, what is the waste factor?  Two questions we get during the first call or at least the first time we quote a price. When comparing floors, the first question you need to ask, how much extra I should order?  The reason, 10% is normal and anything different indicates something out of the ordinary. For example, if someone tells you need to order 600 square feet when you need to cover 500 there is an issue. The only time to exceed 10% is with tavern or cabin (#3) grades or with very small wide plank orders.

Waste factor

The waste factor is not all about defects, in fact the defects cuts outs should never equal more than 10%. Unfinished real wood flooring is not like sticking down a laminate or clicking together an engineered floor the boards are large they are heavy and towards the edges of the room often require cutting. The cut outs cut offs, cut arounds and everything that does not become floor, designated the waste factor. The one exception would be a small order of 1x10x12 which has almost 8 square feet per board. If you mess up too many of those during install and your order is small, you have a problem.

How to install real wood floors

Reasons to go above 10%

A small amount of wood means a small number of boards , errors or more important or avoiding them is more important to be more accurate. Just imagine for a minute if you want to order 400 square feet of 1 x 8 x 12, with waste 440 square feet. Each board contains 6.875 or essentially 7 sq feet per board, so the order contains 64 boards. So that, every board really counts.

All floors including covers have a waste factor

It may come as no shock that we are not fans of engineered or laminate flooring, we refer to them as covers. In fact, you do not buy a floor cover, you lease it. One step further, that leased cover ends up in a landfill with the chemicals which created them, and the ones used to stick them down. But I digress, back to the waste factor which like taxes everyone has to address them. A waste factor is about the skill off the installer, the quality of the materials and the shape in which the arrive.

waste factor

Display the waste factor which occurs when cutting boards during installation

How many square feet per board

  • 1 x 4 x 8 = 2.08 sq ft

  • 1 x 4 x 10 = 2.60 sq ft

  • 1 x 4 x 12= 3.125 sq ft

  • 1 x 6 x 8 = 3.42 sq ft

  • 1 x 6 x 8 = 3.42 sq ft

  • 1 x 6 x 10 = 4.27 sq ft

  • 1 x 6 x 12 = 5.125 sq ft
  • 1 x 8 x 8 = 4.58 sq ft

  • 1 x 8 x 10 = 5.73 sq ft

  • 1 x 8 x 12 = 6.875 sq ft

  • 1 x 10 x 8 = 5.83 sq ft

  • 1 x 10 x 10 = 7.29 sq ft

  • 1 x 10 x 12 = 8.75 sq ft

Our #2 Southern Yellow Pine pictures help everyone comparing our grades, heart content or deciding on a style. Pictures, however are just the jumping off point. So our #2 Southern Yellow Pine pictures offer a great overview of our floors, we suggest samples to answer an final questions.

Alabama Longleaf Pine

According to a report from the Louisiana State University  Agricultural department; there are over 214 million acres of timberland in the United States, with 30% being Southern Pine.  Remeber, Southern pine is not species rather several species. Longleaf pine is found on private land in small batches, it is not farmed. The average age of a farmed tree will be under 20 years compared to 80 and up for Longleaf pine taken for floors. Is a picture worth any words?

As with any floor, #2 Southern Yellow Pine, aka Knotty Pine pictures can be staged or done professionally, even in studio. That is not what we do, many of our pictures come from customer phones, but they are real. Our customers are not professional photographers and we love the ‘honest’ look, before and after the finish. Furthermore, each picture we show you, we have access to either the ‘recipe’ or the customer.Almost every customer of SYP Direct made their decision on grade by studying our #2 Southern Yellow Pine pictures versus those of New Heart Pine.

Heart versus Knotty Pine

Our Heart Pine pictures compared to those of our #2 Knotty pine gives you a feel for the whole floor, not just one sample or board. First time callers often begin by saying ” we saw this picture online and love the look, what is it”? While pictures are not perfect when have multiples and a variety of finish types they do the job.

Southern Yellow Pine Direct offer homeowners the reliability of an A+ rated BBB company; the best quality, pricing and service bar none. We operate under an "old school" philosophy that the customer is always right. We make sure you are just that by educating and dispelling myths about Southern Pine and Heart Pine flooring.
Remember we are a mill to order manufacturer of unfinished and prefinished Southern Pine, including our speciality Heart Pine. Our lead times are normally about two weeks, with Hardwoods and Imports the lead times vary and that is an understatement. 2 days -2 months has bee the answer since COVID. But things are imporving, as White Oak prices continue to fall. (Jason Howard 9/9/2022)

Character Heart Pine

Heart Pine

Character Heart Pine is a creation designed to save you money as we blend 0-40% #2 grade (heartwood) and 50%-85%  Heart Pine floors. The #2 grade has heartwood and some boards will be just as good as the higher grade, the others go into kids rooms and closets.

Character Heart Pine

Character Heart Pine -Save money with creativity

If you are buying the #1 grade 80% Heartwood floor, do you have closets? A mudroom, or a Mother in Law quarters? Just kidding, but you get the point. In fact, our #2 grade Longleaf Pine has up to 40% heart content making it difficult to determine grade. So, blending the grades may reduce heart content by some amount the savings might be worth it, for some customers. The bottom line about heartwood, grades, budget and your order; SYP Direct works for you, we only sell real wood and believe in “One House One Floor”.

Character Heart Pine blends #1 and #2

Our cheapest Heart Pine grade is not really a grade but rather a blend, Character Heart Pine combines Heart Pine with our #2 grade. Same concept as Character Grade White Oak, which combines #1 common with #2 common by extending the length of the board. These grades are very similar but a layperson (should) can tell the difference, same with our #2 and #1 Longleaf Southern Pine. One has enough Heartwood the other doesn’t, not defects but distance from the tree determines these grades.

“Cheapest” Heart Pine Grade

The “cheapest” Heart Pine only works if you are using a value, not price context. These floors, finished clear or stained dark, will be the showpiece of your home so cheap not a great term.  However, we want people to realize that the price per square foot means nothing without context. It is imperative you understand the components within that price. For example, average length and a flooring grade not a marketing term; both very important to avoid being ripped off.
