Wide planks are defined by anything over 5”, including our 1 x 6 (3/4 x 5 1/8). With wide planks and long lengths scream expensive but this requires a large space or long runs. However, using a random width pattern will give you that look, but unlike all 10” planks in 240 square foot bedroom (for example) this also works in smaller spaces.
Mixed width floors, 2 or 3 sizes?
Most mixed width pine floors utilize three different plank sizes. 3-inch, five-inch, and seven-inch designs are most common, though some homeowners and builders opt for different sizes depending on their room and personal design goals. With most customers we suggest 3 widths, 6”, 8” and 10” or 4”, 6” and 10”; and yes, we realize we missed one option, give us a call and we can explain our thinking, based on experience. (Missed 4”, 6” and 8”).
Think about it….
Mixed-width pine floors were just ‘floors’ during colonial times, they used what was in in their front yard. This is why mixed with floors might make some folks think rustic, but not necessarily and never when using prime and or clear pine.
In colonial times, we used the what was in our front yard, i.e. on our property. Or we bought from a mill that ran planks with timber from our property- AND we used every bit of it, and specifying a width by definition creates waste. Yes, mentioning colonial times is cliche’ but we have been doing this a long time and you run out things to say about the most misunderstood species of tree on earth.

In 2018 SYP Direct was named Houzz Hardwood flooring dealer of the year in South Carolina, but North Carolina was the #1 state for sales. In fact, the two Carolina’s have both been in our top 5 states by sales volume for 14 years in a row. The reasons are not all about style and taste because when are talking about North Carolina and ‘her’ sister to the south, the population varies dramatically from coastal […]
Box store pine floors are not as good as ours and they are more expensive. Let me repeat, apples to apples they way more expensive. And even their cheaper stuff is stupid expensive for what it is, or certainly what it is not. In world where laminate and hardwood are regularly used to market some floor cover, you might want to use a healthy skepticism when floor shopping. Rule number 1- or at least the […]
