Heartpine is "knot" all created equal
Heartpine floors will have a percentage range along with price. Let me re-phrase, they should have percentage; if not how could you possible compare apples to apples with regard to price? When get a quote for 1 x 6 “New” Heart Pine, the percentage will be 50-85%, or 50%. Do you have any idea what that means? About $1.50 a sq foot price difference.
The only Heartpine is Antique Reclaimed Heart Pine- false.
100% false but derived from the fact that old growth pine forest do not exist anymore. Old growth is generally considered 300 years or more, in other words, they were here when we got here. Today, we use the phrase New Heart Pine which differentiates the ‘grade’ from reclaimed and or old growth. Our floors are produced using mature timber taken in small batches from private landowners.
If Heartpine is about heartwood or heart content- what is it?
Clear finish most popular
Heartwood, commonly known as heart content consist of heart and sapwood. A good example is our character grade Heart Pine which has more knots and therefore more sapwood than a clear grade. Heart pine without sapwood will usually have more vertical grain, with tones that are more brown than the red found in sapwood. Why is it important? It is all about the money, right?

Does Heart Pine have knots?
Depending on the ‘grade’ and the width to some degree, but basically New heart pine will have some knots. Guess what, sapwood becomes the gorgeous heartwood over time providing the amazing colors in our heartpine. Lumber mill are not flooring mills. Remember most pine mills create 2×4’s not floors. In fact, an astounding 95% of pine floors are produced by dimensional lumber mills and farmed species. They create 2 x 4’s and do not want heartpine or heart content of any kind. Sapwood means knots and you do not build with them, but they sure look great on the floor.
Unfinished #2 "Knotty" SYP
Heartpine, not from lumber yards
Lumber mills sort based on defects which includes knots and color, you know, the good stuff. But when a mill producing Heart Pine sort boards (by hand) it based on the amount of visible heartwood, not defects. Of course defects are removed, that is #3 or cabin grade and we do not sell it from our mill. For more information of deals and low grade floors- give us a call or email. We can access a massive inventory (located NC) of products from all over the country, unfinished or prefinished.
A+ BBB Rating and Customer Service
It takes more than customer service to keep an A+ rating. The product has to meet the quality of experience and our manners. When you ship long heavy pallets to Idaho for example, a bunch of things can go wrong and a beat up floor is not good regardless of price!
The main ingredient- Selling to homeowners sometimes requires dealing with installers that prefer to bundle services. We offer SYP Direct customer service for that situation starting with nice, sometimes ending with finding them a new installer.
