The first time we ship to California, 90210. Yes, and the customer ended up being one of our all time favorites. In fact, our thank you card hung on his Christmas tree that year, circa 2016. H. Nguyen, was our first experience shipping to California, and for that we say thank you again! Mr. Nguyen bought our milled to order #2 Southern Pine.

3 biggest misconceptions CA residents have about pine.
The California misconceptions
Rustic does not mean cheap or “country,” not always anyway. Rustic does not mean anything other than knots and variation when talking about pine, sap and heartwood.
Not all pine is created equal; with 13 species of Southern Pine, age and location matter.
What is pine good for? First of all, forgive the grammar but it makes the point, don’t it? 🙂 If you DO NOT get the joke- I apologize it was pretty dumb. But the question ranks very on high Google search, so give the people what they want.
End-Matched In tongue-and-groove strip and plank flooring, the individual pieces have a tongue milled on one end and a groove milled on the opposite end, so that when the individual strips or planks are butted together, the tongue of one-piece fits into the groove of the next piece. See Side-Matched and Tongue-and-Grooved.
When you are buying unfinished boards, long 8′ and up, you do not need ends matched. The industry tells you that you do, not true.
Tongue and Groove All 4 sides
Tongue-and-Groove In strip, plank and parquet flooring, a tongue is milled on one edge and a groove cut on the opposite edge. As the flooring is installed, the tongue of each strip or unit is engaged with the groove of the adjacent strip or unit.
Profile- is the correct name of tongue and groove and another popular one, V Groove aka Car siding
When timber is live sawn each plank is cut straight off the log in a single direction. The orientation remains unchanged throughout the log allowing the floor a full range of the log’s grain. Including the iconic cathedral grain, sap and heartwood, knots and vertical grain. Live-sawn floors include a mix of clear and natural grades and a variety of graining patterns. This milling technique is the most efficient and eco-friendly of the four because the entire log is utilized. Because at least a third of the planks making up live-sawn floors are quarter-sawn, this type of flooring is stable.
One the questions everyone should ask when buying any type of flooring, how much extra should we order? The answer, or waste factor, is 10%. The 10% extra allows for mistakes during installation, along with any other damages which can occur during the shipping process. Being careful helps, but even real wood professionals with decades of experience order 10% for insurance and selection.
How many boards in the extra 10%
This is a great question because with smaller orders in wider planks the number of boards becomes very important. Why? If you want to know how much extra to order remember a 1 x 4 x 12 contains 3.125 square feet whereas the 1 x 10 x 12 has 8.75. So, if you mess up a 10″ board, you lose much more of total square footage. Make sense? The good news? SYP Direct has a 100% coverage guarantee with your 10% waste factor and our custom crates! Just another reason 75% of our business comes from referrals, we treat you right!
How much extra to order, 10% which does not go to waste
Barn doors, counter top, bar, work station, cutting boards and a chicken coup to name of few. Of course we understand nobody wants to buy more than necessary, however what if? What if you run two boards short but saved $12.00? We ship pine nationwide with less than 1% of customers needing more materials and those two admitted it was their fault. So, when you ask how much extra should we order, round up because, what if?
Homeowners, SYP Direct operates far more as a consultant that bystander helping you deal with local contractors. The cool part, 90% of those contractors we battled for you, work with us today. Don’t be afraid of a little work, research outside the Alexis or paid search results. Use common sense and remember time is money, real wood flooring takes (more) time. Our philosophy is based on ‘One House, One Floor’ which is simply an investment approach to your floor.
The short answer which we rarely offer, not in the normal sense. We sell directly to homeowners, or the end-users of our floors. By rule, most professionals prefer to have their own source that does not offer prices to callers, i.e. homeowners. Our distributors do not want their customers to search for unfinished Heart Pine and finding SYP Direct. So, joint marketing is not a big part of our relationship, for the most part.
The exceptions, investment advisors
Pioneer Log and Timber is a perfect example of distributors who do not mind disclosure. Why? Check out their site, words won’t do it justice. Real wood builders, contractors and professionals do not want you to buy Engineered or LVT. Real wood is an investment and our partners, investment advisors. So while we do not advertise locally for our partner, search our site for your state, we mention builders, local businesses and some homeowners. Meet Virginia.
Carsiding, car siding, rail-car siding and v groove; now which one of these doesn’t belong? We are updating our blog post with this picture because, well its obvious right because it is awesome. And, the writer does not use that word lightly. ‘Burnt’ and ‘Scorched’, two of the names for one of the coolest distressing options ever. Imagine the ceiling on a floor, with more gloss perhaps? Carding looks amazing with paint, too these extremes are not necessary just… awesome.
What is Carsiding also known as V-Groove? Carsiding is similar to tongue and groove except for the deep V groove down the center. The manner in which boards connect is called the profile.
How did carsiding get its name?
The name Carsiding refers to box cars as the boards resemble the interior panels. Carsiding may be interior or exterior, grades vary based on style and paint or stain.
Carsiding and rustic style
Interior siding is stable of today’s rustic style. Ship lap, a term unknown before HGTV is now all the rage. Gap siding and smooth boards are two more popular styles for rustic walls. SYP Direct offers wall skins created from 100% salvaged pine, when available or with enough materials ordered at one time. If you are interested ask for pictures of accent walls from 2020 and talk to us about buying with you, if it works out. Cool V-groove ceiling.
