Unfinished wood floors, what comes to mind when you hear those words strung together? Rustic or rough, perhaps? But we are not talking about a grade or even a description other than a floor requiring a finish or stain. Every floor, or I should say, every real wood floor anyway was once an unfinished wood floor. Having said that, the quality of mill work and the floors depends 100% on that specific mill. For example, our New Heart Pine is not milled with the same lumber as our 2x materials. In fact, not even in the same state.
Unfinished wood floors milled to order
Mill direct unfinished wood floors from Southern Yellow Pine Direct are also milled to order. What does mill direct or milled to order have to do with the value (quality) of our unfinished wood floors? Well direct, means you get the lengths the mill actually cut and not reworked into little boxes. An example would be the floors at any box store– the length of the box has nothing to do with the average length. Ask about the average length at Lumber Liquidators for example- call me if you get an answer that makes sense.
Our unfinished #2 Knotty Pine is gorgeous and certainly not a defect.
Compare our #2 Knotty Pine prices to any pine you find in a box. The problem is how to compare two products where one is the rejects but with NYSE money and the other is really hard to find.
Finishing our Southern Pine
The prime grade Caribbean Heart Pine is a perfect example of unfinished wood floors that do not require sanding. Yes, the sander is on the floor because just because you do not have to sand does not mean that you should never sand. Depends on the finish style, only by opening the grain do you get texture and full penetration of the an Milk Paint Tung oil (Finishing DIY Style) finish for example. Can you leave wood floors unfinished?
Well, you can but why? Some species, such as Brazilian Walnut do not require a finish, even outside. But as a rule, yes. It protects the floors and keeps them looking good for much longer.
