Not about defects

Home - #2 Knotty Pine - Not about defects

Not about defects, in fact they show up ‘barefoot ready’

Our #2 grade Southern Pine, is not a defect and is in fact planned smooth and barefoot ready. We do advise you touch up the rough spots around a few knots, but sanding is not mandatory. Although, they look so much better. Not to mention by removing the soft top layer, your floors are ‘harder’, so why don’t you want to sand? Of course, time and money. Wait, time is money and we get it. Now compare this to the Southern Pine Inspection Bureau standards, telling you what #2 “knotty” pine may contain. The #2 Southern Pine may contain; color variations, knots up to 3″of a 1×6, sapwood, checks up to 1/4 length of the board, 1/4″ holes, unstable knots, and wane up to 8″. That sounds great right, rustic does not mean broken.

Not about defects but a lack of the minimum heart content

Southern pine floors from montana and other states

One great way to understand our grades are not about defects, they are require the same standard 10% waste. In fact, with large orders we move that to 7% on all grades of Southern Pine. The #2 grade of Heart Pine (Alabama) is not about defects, but lack of heart content. If you are buying Southern Pine, this is important information.

Milled to order not sold based on inventory

Our mill takes about 2 weeks to mill your order…the warm weather brings out the builders in force, but they have been getting orders out pretty quickly.  No flooring in stock or on a shelf from other orders.  Milled for you – all boards cut from the same knife, so installation is easy – boards fit together perfectly.

Every floor covering store markets real wood

Please vet your installer.  Be sure you have a pro & not just “some guy” with a hammer, or girl, but the joke sounds better singular! Back to business, If they offer you a quick install – red flag.  Real wood takes time.  Quick sounds great because you want to get your house back in order as soon as possible but that is not best for your investment.  There are steps that are skipped all the time so the guys with a hammer can get to the next paycheck.

A bad installation makes a gorgeous floor, not so gorgeous.

What is worst that could happen? How about the last picture, does that look good? Not about defects, in the wood but we cannot help a with the installation folks. “You can’t fix stupid”, that might be harsh but that specific client allowed us to speak with the person that did this to her floor. He was not pleasant and did not like having to do the work over, the right way.

Antique Reclaimed Heart Pine with saw marks

Baseball, Apple Pie and Southern Pine

It has to be real wood. Southern Pine, real wood, is the most Eco-friendly choice for your floor, period. The exceptions, of course, are endangered or illegal timber, but that is not relevant to our discussion. Our New Heart Pine is not farmed and take from private landowners. While our Yellow Pine is sourced from North Louisiana, farmed timber. That is great information but the reason the real wood is green? IT LAST FOREVER. In […]

SYP Direct sells White Oak solid hardwood flooring

North Carolina

In 2018 SYP Direct was named Houzz Hardwood flooring dealer of the year in South Carolina, but North Carolina was the #1 state for sales. In fact, the two Carolina’s have both been in our top 5 states by sales volume for 14 years in a row. The reasons are not all about style and taste because when are talking about North Carolina and ‘her’ sister to the south, the population varies dramatically from coastal […]

Box store pine floors are short and this are 14 feet long

Box Store Pine Floors

Box store pine floors are not as good as ours and they are more expensive. Let me repeat, apples to apples they way more expensive. And even their cheaper stuff is stupid expensive for what it is, or certainly what it is not. In world where laminate and hardwood are regularly used to market some floor cover, you might want to use a healthy skepticism when floor shopping. Rule number 1- or at least the […]

How long does it take to acclimate pine, how long does acclimation take depends upon moisture content.

Acclimation in six steps

If the flooring material being installed does not have specific acclimation and conditioning instructions, here are the steps to follow: Step 1: Make sure that the heating and air conditioning units are in operation at least five days before delivery of the flooring, during installation and after the flooring is installed. If it is not possible for permanent HVAC to be operating before, during and after installation, a temporary system that mimics normal living conditions […]

Repurpose real wood

Repurpose real wood – salvaged or reclaimed. We want everyone to repurpose real wood. With that in mind, please enjoy this video which cost us $75.00 six years ago, We are “thrifty” like most of our customers, but the content is good. Salvaged is ‘saved’, reclaimed is repurposed; and not the kind of repurposing we are talking about with our folk art. The video should clear it up and if you are shopping for reclaimed […]

Prefinished or Unfinished floors?

When you are deciding between prefinished or unfinished floors the first consideration should be your experience, or a trusted professional with the experience. Prefinished hardwood floors have had all the work done to them before they arrive in your home and are ready to be installed. In most cases this means sanded, stained, and finished with a UV aluminum oxide coating as a topcoat. On the other hand, unfinished boards require; acclimation, finish, drying time, […]
